TitleLetter from [Richard Tetley] Glazebrook, The National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex, to [Robert William] Harrison, Assistant Secretary, Royal Society, Burlington House, W
CreatorGlazebrook; Sir; Richard Tetley (1854 - 1935)
Date28 July 1917
DescriptionDiscusses the need for distinct marks to identify different classes of gauges used in the work being carried out at the National Physical Laboratory, particularly in connection with the Ministry of Munitions. Three classes of gauges are outlined: Official Inspection Gauges, Unofficial Inspection Gauges, Workshop Gauges. Further discusses the need for simplicity and significance in the design of the new mark, mentioning an independent demand from outside firms for gauges to be verified and branded according to submitted drawings. Proposes using the new registered mark. Notes that while the use of the mark in connection with the Ministry of Munitions may be temporary, the need for the second class of work is likely to grow after the war, suggesting that a permanent mark may be required.
