Title | Letter from Margaret Mowat, Secretary, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Storey's Gate, St. James's Park, Westminster, S.W., to The Secretary, The Royal Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, W.1 |
Creator | Mowat; Margaret (fl 1923); Secretary, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers |
Date | 22 November 1923 |
Description | Discusses the potential purchase and subsequent housing of a model of the geared engines of the steamship "Simla" (1853), which is currently on display at the Science Museum in South Kensington. The model is quite large, measuring approximately 15 feet by 7 feet and about 10 feet high, and the owner, Mr. G. Desvignes, has offered it for sale at a suggested price of £440. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has considered acquiring the model due to its historical significance. However, they have determined that it is too large to be permanently housed in their building. Consequently, the Council has explored the possibility of the Science Museum continuing to exhibit the model if it were presented to the nation. In this scenario, the Institution would be willing to contribute £50 towards the purchase price, provided other engineering societies cover the remaining cost. The Council has decided to inquire if the Royal Society would be willing to make a contribution towards the purchase, and if so, how much. |
