TitleLetter from Francis Higginson, Great Globe Exhibition, Leicester Square, London, to the Earl of Rosse, President of the Royal Society
Date14 May 1853
DescriptionRegarding his past correspondence with the Society, in particular Samuel Hunter Christie, on meteoric phenomena. Higginson is highly critical of the fact that the sample of meteoric stones he sent to the Society along with his observations have not been returned to him yet. The specimens were going to be distributed between the Society, the British Museum, and the Geological Societies of London and Dublin with an offer of £300 made to Higginson, which he refuses. Higginson elaborates on his vehement criticism of Christie's behaviour in the course of their communication and reiterates his request for the stones' return. This way, he wishes to avoid the publicity that would accompany formal legal proceedings. Furthermore, he accuses Charles Richard Weld, assistant secretary, of using the influence of the Royal Society to damage Higginson's financial interests.
