TitleCopy letter from Sir Henry Thomas Tizard, to [Ernest Bevin, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs]
Date20 November 1945
DescriptionTizard quotes from Bevin's comments to the House of Commons as recorded on the 7 November in Hansard in relation to the claim 'of scientists to supersede the State', and objects to his remark on the grounds that the Royal Society as a major representative of science in the United Kingdom has neither made, supported or encouraged such a claim. Tizard further objects to the implication that scientists have not observed the Official Secrets Act, noting that the comments or actions of a few individuals in the scientific community cannot be attributed to the whole body of scientists. Tizard finally notes that he does not wish to enter a public discussion, but writes on a private basis on behalf of 'a body of sensible scientists'.
