| Description | Suggests that a letter be sent from the Royal Society to the Secretary of the Admiralty noting the Society's interest in the future of German work on marine research and asking about plans for dealing with Marineobservatorium, Wilhelmshaven and the Deutsche Seewarte, Hamburg. Proudman reports that he had a recent visit from a naval officer who had spent two months in Germany on behalf of the Hydrographic Department, and had asked if the Society would send an enquiry to the Admiralty to expediate consideration of the Hydrographic Department recommendations. Proudman also suggests that he refer to Sir John Edgell, the Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Physical Oceanography on the matter.
Proudman also asks if Professor H Pettersson of the Oceanografiska Institution, Goteborg, Sweden, might be invited to address a meeting of the Society or a special meeting on plans for a Swedish oceanographical expedition. Proudman explains that Pettersson had developed an instrument to get cores of mud from the sea bottom 17 metres long to understand the history of the ocean basins, and the Swedish government had acquired a four masted sailing ship for the expedition. |
