Title | Letter from John Henry Poynting, Foxhill, Alvechurch, to the Secretaries of the Royal Society |
Date | 16 February 1895 |
Description | The half of the Gunning Fund devoted to physical sciences should be considered afresh every six years. It is doubtful whether it could be decided that one particular object would continue as the best means of spending the money. It might seem that making magnetic observations every six years would be a good plan now, the outlook might change over several terms. A quite different scheme might be found better in a dozen years. He suggests a determination of the specific heat of water, or that Professor [Charles Vernon] Boys might be induced to take up a determination of gravity. Some other constant might suggest itself twelve years from now. |
