Description | Application and subsequent correspondence relating to the award of the Foulerton Research Studentship to Dr Howard William Copland Vines, for which he undertook research on the function of the parathyroid glands in relation to disease.

Includes discussion of Vines' application for the award; the requirement that Vines give up private practice and resign from his appointment at Addenbrooke Hospital; the terms of the award as they relate to reports to the committee, equipment grants, the payment of the stipend and the Federated Universities Superannuation System; payment of the stipend; Cushney's suggestion of one of his lecturers, Dr O.S. Gibbs, for a second Foulerton Studentship, 21 February 1924 and the conclusion that this could not happen due to the lack of available funds, with the death of Miss Foulerton within a year of making the gift making them liable for legacy duty; feedback on Vines' report, namely a request for more detail; delays to Vines' work as the result of the illness of both his wife and his sister, and the affect of the Japanese earthquake on his brother, sister-in-law and their child, and Vines' proposed lecture series on the endocrine, 12 March 1924; responses to Vines' second report and his book on parathyroids by the Foulerton Research Fund Management Committee; renewal of Vines' tenure of Studentship for one year, 9 November 1925; a request by Vines for the opinion of Dale on his report, 11 January 1926; the decision not to renew Vines' Studentship again, 26 November 1926, and the question of outstanding expenses; how to dispose of apparatus purchased by means of the Foulerton Fund Grant, and the offering of it to Professor Dean.
