| Description | Your Letter of the 10th instant to Mr Sulivan Chairman of the Court of Directors of the East India Company was Yesterday at your Request Communicated to the said Court, by whose Command I am to acquaint you for the Information of your Honourable Society, That they are extremely desirous of contributing everything in their Power for facilitating the making observations upon the Transit of Venus over the Sun on the 6th of June next, and for that purpose they will give directions to their Governour and Council of Fort Marlborough upon the West Coast of the Island Sumatra to accommodate in a suitable manner the Two Gentlemen who are to proceed thither in His Majesty's Ship the Sea Horse, with Diet and Apartments, to give them all the assistance as to materials and Workmen, and whatever else the Service they are employed upon may require, and when they are ready to leave the Island to provide them a Passage home, all at the Company's Expence.
As no Ship will come to England directly from Sumatra, these Gentlemen must necessarily proceed either by the way of China, or Our Presidencys of Fort St George, Fort William or Bombay and Orders will be given for their accommodation accordingly.
Agreeable to the Request signified in your Letter Capt. William Wilson who was lately at Sumatra and is prefectly qualified to give every necessary information the Honourable Society may desire, now waits upon you; to him therefore the Gentlemen in the Direction beg leave to refer you for further Particulars. |
