Title | Draft letter from Sir Joseph Banks to Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh |
Date | 24 February 1808 |
Description | On restoring to the Icelanders the whole of their ships and cargoes. Such a measure will make a deep impression on the inhabitants and render easy the cession of the island to the British Crown and it will also help prevent famine in Iceland.
At this time, Iceland was ruled by Denmark - an ally of France in the Napoleonic Wars. Banks was involved in attempts to improve trade between Iceland and the United Kingdom. |
