| Description | Giving details of previous attempts to complete the passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific round the Northern Coast of North America and outlining reasons why the search for the passage should not be abandoned.
Barrow points out that the expedition could also be used for research into Observations on Terrestial Magnetism (which a recent expedition to Antarctica had also looked into) and quotes Sir Edward Sabine that "a final attempt to make the North-West Passage would render the most important service that now remains to be performed towards the completion of the Magnetic Survey of the Globe".
Barrow states that: "There can be no objection with regard to any apprehension of the loss of Ships or Men". However, the attempt to complete the discovery of the North-West Passage by Sir John Franklin using HMS Erebus and HMS Terror did not succeed and resulted in the loss of both ships. |
