Notes'Mr Robinson' and 'the Fort' - William Robinson (1644-1712) was Surveyor General in Ireland 1671-1700 and Superintendant of Fortifications 1677-1700. He was a major architect in pre Palladian architecture in Ireland and the scope of his activity was wide ranging; one of his largest jobs was not a building, but the large fort near Kinsale, Charles Fort, begun in 1671, and almost certainly the Fort mentioned in this letter.
' His Grace' - The Duke of Ormond, the Chief Governor of Ireland at this date, was ageing and confided much in Sir Robert Southwell (1635-1702)
