TitleLetter from Henry Tattam, Bedford, to Dr John Lee, Hartwell House, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
Date21 April 1840
DescriptionHas procured letters from Mr Grimshawe. Thanks Lee for sending a parcel 'of no consequence' containing the proceedings of the Royal Society of Literature. Tattam has just had a letter from his brother informing Tattam of his nephew's death in Madeira. A clergyman who was with Tattam's nephew shortly before his death also wrote. Eliza [Tate, Tatttam's stepdaughter] is unwell and has gone to Renhold. Sends regards from Mrs Tattam [Eliza Ann Tattam nee Nash then Platt].

The verso side of the letter contains Lee's reply addressed from Hartwell and dated 26 April 1840, in which he thanks Tattam for forwarding Grimshawe's letters and comments on their reflection of Grimshawe's enthusiasm and benevolence showing his 'European character and Bedfordshire habits'. Notes that Grimshawe is leaving his assistant Mr Coster in Egypt and is pleased with the part himself and Tattam played in introducing them. Sends condolences on Tattam and his brother's loss and best wishes for Miss [Eliza] Tate's recovery. Informs that he is going to London the following week. Reassures Tattam that his lost manuscripts may still be recovered if Colonel Hodges will use his influence.
