Provenance | Previously belonged to Prince Stanislaw Poniatowski. Prince Stanislaw Poniatowski (1754 – 1833) commissioned 2,500 gems to be made by Luigi Pichler and Nicolo Cerbara, and encouraged ‘the belief that they were, in fact, ancient’; this collection was sold after his death at a Christie’s auction in 1839 (April 29–May 21) and purchased by the Royal Society ('Object biographies and interdisciplinarity' AM Roos, Notes & Records, vol 73, no 3). Tags on the gems refer to their lot number in their auction at Christie's in 1839. |
