TitleLetter from Edward Sabine, Woolwich to Humphrey Lloyd
Date12 April 1843
DescriptionLloyd enquired about the points that [Joseph Henry] Kay wrote to him about. Sabine notes they had accidently overlooked Kay’s report of deficiencies. Sabine recognises Kay’s merits and the regularity with which he has kept up the observations at Hobart. Sabine discusses Kay’s sketch on terrestrial magnetism printed in the Tasmanian journal [of natural science, agriculture, statistics] and is perplexed that his name was not mentioned in it. Sabine did not expect such an omission from a member of [James Clark] Ross’s expedition [reference to the Antarctic expedition], and mentions he has never met Kay therefore could not have personally offended him. Discussion on the observations made by Kay at the observatory [in Tasmania; Lutruwita or Truwana, then colonial Van Diemen’s Land]. Sabine discusses magnetical instruments. Sabine provides the formula for the mean position for the observations.
