TitleLetter from Charles James Buchanan Riddell, Dresden to Humphrey Lloyd, Dublin
Date26 October 1843
DescriptionRiddell thanks Lloyd for his corrections on the formula for inclinometer corrections. Riddell informs Lloyd that individual readings are to be corrected at own observatories. Discussion regarding Riddell’s mistake in the instructions for absolute intensity. Riddell hopes that the changes he made in Hamburg will be approved by Lloyd. Discussion on the first instructions, in which Riddell intends to make clear that the use of the long formula was not required on a magnetic survey.

Instruments used at fixed observatories and magnetic surveys a more accurate method of calculation is required. Discussion on the difficulties in calculating the values of P and Q from the dimensions. When a large number of instruments are ordered it will be difficult to have the magnets of the same dimensions.

Riddell is looking for a house to live in for six weeks, as travelling and living in hotels is not practical for learning German.
