Title | Letter from Pieter Adrian Bergsma, Utrecht to Edward Sabine |
Date | 19 September 1859 |
Description | Bergsma informs Sabine that the Dutch government has decided to build a magnetical and meteorological observatory on the island of Java, and he has been appointed its director. Bergsma is authorised to order self-recording instruments similar to those prepared for the observatories in the English colonies. Bergsma has arranged to be informed by Mr [Patrick] Adie how long he will require to make a set of instruments. Bergsma requests Sabine to recommend Mr Adie to take the same care preparing his instruments ‘as if destined for an English observatory’. Hermann Schlagintweit prefers English instruments to German made ones.
Professor [Christopher Henyk Diderich] Buys Ballot sends his respects to Sabine and apologises that he has been unable to meet the members of the British Association. |
