Description | Discussion on the Russian observations obtained by Sabine for Birt. According to Birt it is evident that they have very little information in the south, especially Spain, Portugal, north Africa. Birt suggests that by the recommendation of the British Association, it may be possible to persuade the government to make observations by Her Majesty’s ships at certain foreign stations. John [Frederick William] Herschel agrees with Birt regarding this matter and argues these atmospheric waves should be ‘hunted down’. Herschel notes that the British Association should take a lead on this, and a request made by them would not be disregarded by the admiralty. However Herschel has clarified that if a committee is appointed regarding this matter he would prefer not be named as he is extremely busy with other subjects. |
