Title | Private letter from William Benjamin Carpenter, University of London, Burlington House to Edward Sabine |
Date | 21 March 1870 |
Description | Carpenter informs Sabine that he has had to postpone matters relating to the ‘porcupine expedition’ [reference to the deep-sea explorations using ‘HMS Porcupine’]. Carpenter describes his heavy workload with University matters, 112 candidate for the office of his assistant, and the preparation of a new building to be opened by Queen [Victoria] on 11th May. Carpenter has written a paper based on a lecture he gave to the Royal Institute, that will serve as a basis for their application for a deep-see expedition. Carpenter describes two objectives of the last expedition which were not carried out. Mr Lowe and Mr Childers express their support for such an endeavour. |
