Title | Letter from James Challis, Cambridge to Edward Sabine |
Date | 20 September 1866 |
Description | Refers to the favourable opinion of the adjudicators of the Adams Prize of Mr [Edward] Walker’s essay. Challis discusses Sabine’s agreement of the merits of Mr Walker’s essay. Remarks Walker’s essay will be helpful in furnishing data for a mathematical theory, and testing that theory. Reference to Newton’s theory of gravitation. Challis suggests the advancement of physical science in the theoretical department demands the discovery of the analogous reasoning for calculating the motions of a collection of material elements constituting an elastic fluid. In Challis’s opinion until the application of mathematics is not solved, it is not possible to have the true theories of light, heat, and magnetism. Discussion on Challis’s investigations regarding the proper mathematical treatment of the motion of an elastic fluid. Challis mentioned to Walker about Sabine’s suggestion that he become a Fellow of the Royal Society. |
