DescriptionChambers refers to the Resolution of Government, Marine Department, No. 68 dated 4th instant, and submits his letter No. 10 [see MS/257/1/345] for the consideration of the government. Discussion on the objective of the Indian observatory as detailed by the Secretary of State in his communication No. 91 dated 31t October 1866. Reference to the Resolution of Government, Marine Department, No. 514 dated 26th July 1866.

Chambers lists the staff currently employed by the [Colaba Observatory], and their competency to work on magnetic and electrical phenomena.

Discussion on the restriction of magnetic and meteorological observations, and astronomy to determine local time.

Chambers suggests the establishment of a committee of ‘magneticians’ at home to be able to instruct on the best course of action at [Colaba Observatory], or the Astronomer Royal to draw up a plan of operations.

Includes a letter from Secretary Colonel W F Marriott to the Secretary to the Government of India (Home Department) dated 14th March 1867. Marriott acknowledges receiving the Secretaries letter No. 708 dated 22nd January.

Marriott refers to the maintenance of observatories in India, and Chambers suggestions.
