TitleLetter from Christopher Henyk Diderich Buys Ballot, Utrecht to Edward Sabine
Date29 July 1853
DescriptionBallot thanks Sabine for his third volume of the [Hobart], ‘Hobarton’ observations. Ballot informs Sabine regarding his publication of meteorological observations in the Netherlands, and the lack of support from the government, and notes his ‘undertaking is still a private one’. Ballot will not publish observations from 1853 until he receives some support from the government, and notes the observations for 1852 are already published and is an extension of the year 1851, which is a greater extension of 1849 and 1850. Ballot discusses how his first publication must embrace all of Europe, and the usefulness of all observers. Ballot discusses writing to Mr [Adolph Theodor] Kupffer for support. Ballot expresses his happiness that the practical part of his address to the government will be attended to. Ballot refers to Mr [Mathew Fontaine] Maury, and the [first international maritime conference held for devising a uniform system of meteorological observations at sea].
