Title | Letter from Christopher Henyk Diderich Buys Ballot, Utrecht to Edward Sabine |
Date | 14 February 1858 |
Description | Ballot informs Sabine that the Minister of Colonies has sent his paper regarding plans for magnetic and meteorological observations in Java, Sumatra, Borneo, [Sulawesi, colonial name Celebes], Timor and other stations, to the Royal Academy of Amsterdam for further examination. Ballot has a very ‘able’ person to be made Director of the observatory at Java, and suggests this person should meet Sabine, learn from him, see the instruments and order instruments for himself.
Ballot is confident that the Academy will confirm his report. Reference to the Toronto observations. Ballot asks Sabine to inform him of the price of a full set of magnetical instruments and to order two sets on his behalf. Ballot requests Sabine to write him a letter regarding his plan which Ballot may be able to use at the next meeting of the Royal Academy.
Ballot intends to set up observatories in Manado and [?] in the future. Mr van Gogh was pleased with indications from Admiral [Robert] FitzRoy. |
