Title | Letter from Charles Meldrum, Mauritius to Edward Sabine |
Date | 6 February 1863 |
Description | Meldrum thanks Sabine for the correspondence regarding the erection of a ‘powerful telescope in the Melbourne Observatory’ and for the advice in which ‘manner’ an application should be made for magnetical instruments for Mauritius. A site has been fixed for the meteorological and magnetical observatory ‘with a view to take hourly observations’. Informs Sabine of Sir William Stevenson’s (Governor of Mauritius) death. Meldrum fears their efforts [to establish an observatory] will now be delayed. Discussion regarding the recommendation of the observatory to be a ‘public institution’. The old observatory will be sold and the funds used to construct a new building. Refers to storms and earthquake in the region. Remarks on ‘no unusual movement of the declination magnetometer’. Meldrum intends to visit England to procure instruments for the new observatory. |
