Title | Letter from [Johann Georg] Kohl, Bremen to [Edward Sabine] |
Date | 14 February 1866 |
Description | Kohl refers to meeting Sabine 12 years ago and his work on ‘the history of the discovery of America and the surrounding oceans’, ‘the history of exploration of the oceanic currents’, and the Atlantic gulf stream. Kohl’s early history of the gulf stream using Sabine’s observations from 1821 and 1822 were printed in the geographical magazine of Berlin and ‘favourably received’. Kohl has therefore written a ‘complete history of the gulf stream’ and describes the breadth of the work and sources he used. Refers to Sabine’s complaints in his memoir regarding the course of ‘mild winters’ and his inability to prove a ‘prolongation’ of the gulf stream for 1846. Kohl asks Sabine if he has been able to ‘subsequently’ prove such a ‘prolongation’ and includes a list of questions on the subject. |
