Title | Letter from Johann [von] Lamont, Munich to Edward Sabine, Woolwich |
Date | 29 November 1857 |
Description | Lamont refers to receiving a packet from Mr [Georg Balthazar von] Neumayer. References Neumayer’s ‘purpose of making magnetic observations in Australia’. Lamont discusses determining ‘magnetic constants at different places in France, Spain and Portugal’ and believes his observations are sufficient to make ‘very accurate magnetic maps of those countries’. Lamont informs Sabine, the King of Bavaria (who provided a large sum of money to Neumayer for his expedition), has ‘granted and equal sum to a young man of Hamburgh’ to make ‘magnetic observations on the eastern coast of Africa (Zanzibar’). |
