TitleLetter from Johann [von] Lamont, Munich to Edward Sabine, Woolwich
Date4 August 1859
DescriptionLamont sends Sabine a copy of his magnetic survey of the north of Germany, results of meteorological observations made at Munich in which Lamont discusses ‘new theoretical views’. Lamont describes his ‘endeavours’ to show the electric force of the sun may be ‘considered as producing an atmospheric tide’ and its effects on the barometer and magnetic variations. Discussion regarding the creation of sun spots. Lamont expresses the need for ‘conducting physical investigations’ regarding even ‘doubtful’ theories. Discusses setting up new magnetic instruments and describes his findings. Discussion regarding Lamont’s latest discovery regarding a correction when ‘computing the observations of the inclination instrument’. Lamont has been unable to travel to Italy due to the ‘disturbed state of the country’. Lamont references Professor Wolf visiting Munich and disagreeing with him ‘in all respects’ due to Wolf’s ‘limited’ experience and views.
