Title | Letter from Francis Ronalds, Chiswick to Edward Sabine |
Date | 30 June 1848 |
Description | Ronalds addresses his replies to Sabine’s questions from the 13th regarding ‘condition of the Kew Observatory and the later proceedings there’, ‘reduction of observations already made’, and the ‘continuation of observation and future costs thereof’.
Ronalds informs Sabine the exterior of the [Kew Observatory] has recently undergone repair work ‘by order of Her Majesty’s Government’ and describes the fixtures and furniture. Refers to the contents of the ‘little library’, and the instruments employed. Discussion regarding electric observations. Describe instruments used ‘for experiments and extraordinary and ordinary observations’. Ronalds proposes ‘to have a complete catalogue made of everything contained in the building’.
Ronalds discusses what has been at the Kew Observatory since the report of the Committee in May 1846, referring to his last two volumes of ‘Observations and Experiments’. Refers to the journal of ordinary observations, magnetic photographs, and Dr Banks experimental registering anemometer. Ronalds discusses his preliminary experiments made with the thermometer, barometer, and electrometer. Refers to improvements to magnetic apparatus. Electrical apparatus began for the [Mumbai] Bombay Observatory, drawings of Mr [John] Scott Russell’s experiments arrived, experiments pursued regarding ‘the apparatus for registering photographically the electricity of the atmosphere’.
Discusses ‘Mr [James] Glashier’s remarks on the weather’ for the Registrar General Report, including his quote.
Ronalds is unable to provide an estimated cost for reducing observations, discusses what he proposes to do regarding this and if a grant will be required. Discussion regarding Mr [William Radcliffe] Birt’s proposal regarding electrical observations.
Ronalds discusses the importance of continuing observations at Kew, despite the work of the Greenwich Observatory. Comparisons between the observatories at Kew and Greenwich. Remarks on the annual cost of future observations and maintenance of the Kew Observatory.
Ronalds makes general opinion, remarks, and shares his views on the question of ‘continuance’ of observations at Kew. |
