Title | Letter from Edward Whymper, 19 Canterbury Place, Lambeth Road to Edward Sabine |
Date | 30 November 1872 |
Description | Whymper expresses his interest in Greenland but is unable to make expeditions to the west coast. Whymper is interested in fiords, and whether there is a fiord ‘which extends from one side to the other’. Whymper refers to the discovery of a fiord on the west coast [of Greenland] that ‘has never been entered by Europeans, but which the natives [sic] have followed for 40 miles without seeing any termination’ [referring to Greeenlandic Inuit or Kalaallisut], links to possible other fiords.
Whymper hopes to continue his examination of the ‘coal bearing strata of North Greenland’.
Whymper describes loss of times in travelling to Greenland, asks Sabine if one of the Societies may be able to assist with this. |
