TitleCopy of a letter from James Thomas Walker, Dehra Doon [Dehradun], to Balfour Stewart
Date3 January 1868
DescriptionRegarding Walker’s annual report to the government of India. Discussion regarding pendulum operations and the determination of expansions by vibrations under the natural pressure, and comparison with General [Edward] Sabine’s results. Comparison of results between Masoori [Mussoorie] and Dehra Doon [Dehradun]. Discussion regarding the temperature of the pendulums and reference of the ‘ordinary diurnal fluctuations’ and ‘diurnal variation of the temperature’. Walker asks Stewart to suggest a method to determine the temperature of a pendulum and describes the method. Discussion regarding Captain [James Palladio] Basevi pendulum experiments. Remarks on errors within pendulum observations. Discussion regarding Stewart’s ball observations at Kew, Sabine’s deductions of the expansion, and [George Biddell] Airy’s [showing] discrepancies in experiments to determine differences of expansion of two pendulums in the effort to determine ‘the mean density of the earth’.

Discussion regarding magnetic results at [Dehradun] and their confirmation by Mr [Charles] Chambers in Mumbai, previously known as Bombay]. Discussion regarding Basevi’s recent trip to [Mumbai] and his horizontal force observations. Walker discusses instruments used to determine time and latitude. Reference to the trigonometrical survey.
