Title | Copy letter from W [William] Sharpey, Secretary of the Royal Society; to Captain [Francis] McClintock R N |
Date | 6 June 1857 |
Description | Informs that following Francis McClintock's application, a Committee consisting of Admiral [Robert] FitzRoy, Dr [Joseph Dalton] Hooker and Dr W A [William Allen] Miller was set up and voted £50 from the donation fund to assist in the purchase of meteorological instruments for the upcoming [Artic] expedition. The Committee will transmit the memorandum of General Edward Sabine, who will furnish the instruments. Instructions for taking observations will be drawn up by FitzRoy and the appropriate equipment will be provided by the Marine Department of the Board of Trade. Mr Hooker and Sir W [Wlliam Jackson] Hooker will provide instructions of how to collect and preserve plants, and will provide 'Wandian Cases' to bring back roots for Kew Gardens. As for the difficulties of Mr Grey to obtain the required permission to accompany the exhibition, includes an extract of the resolution of the Committee for the President [of the Royal Society] to bring this to the attention of the Lords of the Admiralty.
