Title | Letter from J [John] Brown, Longhurst, Dunmurry, Belfast, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Brown; John (1850-1911); British manufacturer |
Date | 17 February 1903 |
Description | Alex came and gave his ideas and they agreed that the experiment did not teach much beyond the paper being a kind of semi-conductor. He [Alex] thought the question that Larmor wanted to solve was whether residual charge was due to induction or conduction and it would be useful to try a dielectric in halves between charged plates [diagram included]; then discharge and examine the halves. If Brown knew exactly what was to be tested he could devise the means. Hopkinson's collected papers is not to be seen here and he asks to borrow it. The other Volta experiment will have to be tested under paraffin to avoid atmospheric influence; he is preparing for it, and he gives some details, including from an old experiment. |
