Title | Letter from J [John] Brown, Edenderry House, Belfast, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Brown; John (1850-1911); British manufacturer |
Date | 16 January 1894 |
Description | He has looked over the paper mentioned by Larmor and gives his opinion of it. It seems carefully done although Brown thinks they could not be sure of measuring the thicknesses of deposits by calculations of the amount of current where the quantities are so small. He gives other criticism, saying that the realm of oxide films is terra incognita or at least neglected. He continues with an observation found on p.356 which he considers 'striking': molecules acting like magnets through intervening films or liquid without being in contact with it was new to Brown. He was aware that gilding on Volta condensor plates must be thick or the metal acts through it, but he thought it was because of imperfections. He is unsure of what Overbeck means by molecular force of the platinum, but discusses this. He hopes that Larmor did not catch influenza - Brown did and he has been laid up since New Year. He is tired of home improvements but the place looks well and he hopes it will be finished by March. From remarks of Lett's he judges that his paper would come before a chemist as a foreign language and it might have difficulty in gaining acceptance. |
