| Description | Larmor's note has perplexed him. Last time he was pressed to do his second year as Chairman of Council of the Society of Arts, and after consultation on the address he would give, he accepted it in order to deliver his views. Without his subject he would not have delivered it. He does not see how this address will affect what the President has to say about Royal Society authority. He is taking as his text the necessity of attaching the Meteorological Office and the National Physical Laboratory to a Government department and leaving the Royal Society as advisors. He has the first proof of his address which he asks Larmor to keep confidential: it was in type before he wrote to Larmor. It does not take in the Royal Society more than is necessary. He is not on the committees of the respective institutions, nor on Council of the Royal Society, and he has been approached as an independent man of science. He cannot possibly change the subject, since the address is to be given on Wednesday next, and it is a great labour. If the same end is independently pointed to by the President, it will do good. He will look to see how much he can take out about the Royal Society. |
