Title | Letter from A B [Alfred Barnard] Basset, Fledborough Hall, Holyport, Berkshire, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Basset; Alfred Barnard (1854-1930); British mathematician |
Date | 24 October 1894 |
Description | Basset was exceedingly surprised that his name did not appear as a candidate for the Presidency [of the London Mathematical Society]. He is the senior F.R.S., the senior applied mathematician when the retiring President is a pure mathematician, and he has taken some trouble with the Incorporation of the Society, saving expense. Basset discusses his seniority to MacMahon and others. He has other interests in life more important than the L.M.S. and he will not trouble with it unless his claims are recognised. He will probably retire from Council next year. |
