Title | Letter from A B [Alfred Barnard] Basset, Grand Hotel Californie, Cannes, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Basset; Alfred Barnard (1854-1930); British mathematician |
Date | 28 January 1897 |
Description | He is obliged for Larmor's paper and he must consign it to that same class of literature he referred to the first paragraph of his own paper. It contains several sentences with no intellible meaning. Any will with similar sentences would find its way into Chancery. He thinks Larmor has put statements into his mouth which he has never made. Larmor must state what he thinks is the mathematical expression for E.M.F., then show that it furnishes a value making the force continuous at an interface. He thinks he will be able to drive coach and four through Larmor's reply. He offers general advice on clear language in writing, including not emulating the style of an older generation of scientists, 'who wrote...such vile English...'. |
