Title | Letter from H [Harry] Bateman, Lake Bellona Avenue, Govans, Maryland, to Sir Joseph [Larmor] |
Creator | Bateman; Harry (1882-1946); British mathematician |
Date | 8 February 1914 |
Description | Thanking Larmor for helping in the publication of his book. He has rewritten chapter 8, adding a general solution of the equations with a fresh interpretation of the results, suggesting that fields with line singularities might be useful for a discussion of Sir Joseph Thomson's theory of discontinuous aether. Bateman has proved that singularities may not be projected when the point charge is moving with uniform velocity. The field derived from his potentials is the same at that in the usual theory. Bateman is interested in the model of an electron given in Larmor's Aether and Matter. Could the line round which the twist takes place correspond to one of Bateman's singular lines? He wonders if this had already ocurred to Larmor, but he will not mention it in the text as it might not agree with Larmor's ideas. |
