TitleLetter from Charles James Buchanan Riddell, Woolwich to Humphrey Lloyd
Date15 February 1844
DescriptionRiddell asks Lloyd about the new instrument regarding the observations of vibrations, if they should be made in the copper box belonging to the instrument, in a wooden box of the same form and dimension placed temporarily on the base, or in a separate wooden box detached and free from metal. Riddell notes Mr [Johann von] Lamont uses the copper box only in his single instruments. Riddell argues the second suggestion would be the simplest. In the portable declinometer and small bifilar magnetometer in affixed observatory Riddell hopes to keep the instruments away from metal. Discussion on [Wilhelm] Weber’s transportable magnetometer. Riddell suggests adding the vibration box as a necessary part of the apparatus. Riddell endeavours to include all possible information regarding the different instruments that are now to be used.
