DescriptionRiddell informs Lloyd that with government consent if the observatory at St Helena will remain under the Board of Ordnance, Lieutenant Strange [Royal Artillery], will be appointed [William James] Smythe’s successor. Riddell notes if Lloyd meets Lieutenant Strange, he will like him, Strange at present does not know much about the subject, but more than most. Riddell asks Lloyd to give Strange any instruction or advice he can offer.

Discussion regarding the new unifilar for the future service of the observations, and collimator magnets lens and scale. Riddell describes his idea regarding when the telescope and scale are at parallel rays, and the relation to the prolongation of the magnetic axis. Riddell discusses the azimuth of a distant object.

Riddell informs Lloyd that Strange is travelling to join his company at Dublin, and that Lloyd will find him to be a ‘countryman’.
