TitleLetter from Humphrey Lloyd, Kilmarnock Cabinteely to Charles James Buchanan Riddell
Date26 July 1845
DescriptionLloyd informs Riddell that he is not currently in Dublin, therefore missed seeing Riddell’s friend [Lieutenant Strange] when he called but hopes to see him at other opportunities. Lloyd agrees with Riddell’s assessment of the collimator magnets. Discussion on the principle of the collimator, including a drawing of rays produced from the lens. Lloyd discusses when the object glass of the telescope catches the smallest part of the parallel brush of rays. Lloyd is expecting to receive his small collimator magnet from [James Clark] Ross very soon and will let Riddell know about its performance. Lloyd mentions hearing a rumour that the Master General had sanctioned the further employment of officers of the Royal Artillery in magnetic work, but assumes this is not true as Riddell has not informed him of this.
