TitleLetter from Gideon Algernon Mantell, Castle Place, Lewes, to William Buckland, President of the Geological Society, 20 Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London
Date16 June 1825
DescriptionSubmitting two sketched designs for the seal of the Geological Society. He wished to be at the meeting of Council, but it was outside his power. He describes the designs as having the Gods of Fire and Water supporting the shields, with rocks, torrents, volcanoes and organic remains. He would prefer something more simple and classical but is too busy to give it his full attention. He appends a joke design and the motto 'Veritas in puteo'. For organic remains, he suggests a palaeotherium, an Irish elk and a plesiosaur. Mantell has sent to Buckland a plate of the 'New ichthyolites in chalk' and his paper on iguanodon, with casts of the horn and carocoid bone. He asks if Buckland has received them safely and presents Mrs Mantell's compliments.
