Title | Letter from Thomas Edward Thorpe, Emmaville, Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, to Caroline Emma Thorpe |
Date | 21 August 1878 |
Description | He has finally met up with Schuster and Haskins, who were delayed into Cheyenne by a water-spout carrying away part of the railway line. The Mormon President, John Taylor has proved very helpful, giving the party a good site for observations in the garden of Brigham Young's first wife and offering to set up a telegraph line to Ogden Observatory. Thorpe's observations are among the best he has obtained. Describes Brigham Young's rule: 'how they feared & hated him, to be sure!'. They have also met Orson Pratt and heard him and Brigham Young junior preach a sermon. Describes camping in the canyons and naming features after his wife. They intend to move on to Ogden soon. |
