Description | Laing writes that he is sending the Editor a statement of a journey performed by a Mahomedan priest from Egypt to the Bullom shore. He comments on the limited success acheived thus far by British forays into the interior of Africa, and the advantage that native travel accounts can provide. The remainder of the letter describes the journey of Mahamed Misrah, a native of Alexandria who travels westward, and what he has to say about his recollection of the Niger river at various points, as well as the towns he encounters along his way. The letter also contains a shorter statment of a native of Yawori. Laing records an extensive account of the town of Jenne, and compares Misrah's statements about the Niger with what the explorerer Mungo Park has written.
Contains a sketch of a profile of a face, possibly of Mahamed Misrah. |
