Description | Describes the events leading up to Alexander Gordon Laing's death after reaching Timbuktu. Sheikh Babani took a dangerously wounded Laing to the home of Sheikh Mohamed Mochtar. Sheikh Babani remained with Laing for two months, but then died. Laing stayed at Sheikh Babani's home two more months, after which he was conveyed to the Tanbooktu. At Tanbooktu, Prince Osman Ben Ahmed, Laing's host, received a letter from the Sultan Ahmed Ben Mohamed Lubo warning to not allow Christians to infiltrate the country any further. Governor Osman sent Laing's party out of the country, in the care of another sheikh, Barbooshi. Upon arriving at his own home on about 30 November 1826, Sheikh Barbooshi murdered Laing.
