Commencing: 'I, Matthew Stewart D.D., Professor of Mathematics in the University of Edinburgh, do grant and agree...'. Signed by Matthew Stewart. Sealed and delivered in the presence of William Mason and Alexander Mason, with an embossed seal for two shillings and sixpence. Matthew Stewart's appended seal impression is a profile of Sir Isaac Newton, with a comet.

Inscribed by Emanuel Mendes da Costa; 'NB this Bond was sent by the Post to Edinburgh and was signed there, and transmitted to me again by the Post'. Endorsed verso.
