TitleCopy letter from Edward Sabine, Vice President and Treasurer of the Royal Society; to Lord Rosse [William Parsons], President of the Royal Society
Date28 February 1853
DescriptionInforms of receiving Charles Babbage's letter from Weld and informs him the matter will be discussed at the meeting before Easter, 17 March and decided upon then, or when Lord Rosse is in town. Points out discrepancies, in that in his correspondence he refers to 'the Council' as a substitute to 'the President and the Council'. Another is the accusation by Babbage that the Council had no official knowledge of Babbage's charges and took no steps to resolve it. Attending all of the meetings since the preceeding Anniversary, Edward Sabine can confirm the subject was never brought up, and the charges were never heard of until that moment. Suggests his colleagues would be equally ignorant. States that these 'mis-statements ... cannot be allowed to pass without notice'. [See MS/426/476]
