| Description | Directed by a special Committee consisting of Col. Sabine, Mr Grave and Mr File to address John Wood on the following subject. Explains that in 1832, the Government and the Commissioners of Excire asked the Royal Society to undertake inquiries to construct an instrument to change the duty on spirits. A Committee of [Michael] Faraday, Francis Bailey and other was created and drew up a final report in 1836. It was believed all expenses had been paid by the government, but the executors of the late Mr Bates, an instrument maker, have claimed £157. 16. 10, plus £109. 4. for personal attendance and services. The papers of the Committee do not state whether Mr Bate was employed by the Royal Society or was offering his services. Sends the corresponding documents and ask for enquiries to be made into whether any vouchers exists for services made for. |
