TitleCopy letter from Edward Sabine, Treasurer of the Royal Society; to Lord Rosse [William Parsons], President of the Royal Society
Date10 November 1854
DescriptionReplies that the Council have under consideration Lord Rosse's suggestion, and returns the letter for any needed corrections, before the Council breaks up. That Rosses' suggestion to have a longer list of those in public positions, that could influence the government to the advancement of science, than initially drafted [to appoint to the Council if the Royal Society] is under consideration. Dr Lyon Playfair has been replaced by the Earl of Harrowby [Dudley Ryder] and Lord [John] Wrottesley have also been added for their participation in the sciences. As for the Duke of Northampton [Charles Douglas-Compton],states that he has hardly attended a single meeting of the past year. The Statutes insist on the appointment of someone who is likely to attend meeting. Concerning Duke of Argyle, [George John Douglas Campbell] states promise as Aryle has interest in geology and ornithology and has accepted the accession of the Presidency of the British Association to Lord Harrowby. The only issue is that as a member of the Cabinet, his attendance will be limited. Lord Ashburton [William Bingham Baring] has very recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and only attended the meeting in which he was admitted, may still be a promising candidate for the Council. The Council recognises the work of Sir R [Robert] Willis, but states the nature of the Society in the past few years requires specialists. Expresses regret of the Council that Rosse himself would like to step down as a member of the Council due to lack of attendance. This notice has come late, after the consideration lists have already been printed and ready for distribution. Asks for Lord Rosse to reconsider.
