| Description | In regards to the recent rejection of the proposal to conduct a batterymetrical survey of Scottish Lochs by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and asks for a reconsideration. Informs the topological or geological knowledge of the UK will not be complete without the survey of the depths of the lakes. Explains the progress and assures it will not have a large expenditure. States similar work has been conducted elsewhere in Europe and by the Admiralty Surveying Officers of English and Irish Lakes in 1830s and 1846. Understands the failure of the proposal is that it does not come within the scope of either the Survey Office, or the Admiralty, but acceptance will not set an undesirable precedence. A copy of this letter has also been sent to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. [See MS/427/358] |
