Description | Family transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes Herschel's scientific and social life, with meteorological and astronomical observations. The year commences with a note on a sunspot seen on 31 December 1856 and continues with sunspot observations taken throughout 1857. These are accompanied by small drawings copied from the originals. Occasional visitors to Collingwood House are noted, including Charles Babbage, George Biddell Airy and William Whewell. On 26 October Herschel walks to St Leonards-on-Sea to meet [Frank?] Buckland and James Scott Bowerbank, the latter showing sections of sponges.
