DescriptionFamily transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes events, including John Herschel's astronomical work at Feldhausen Observatory, South Africa, interspersed with observations on botany, geology, natural history, and on his personal and social life at the Cape. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals. The volume ends with summary observations of Cape plants and notes on justice, candles and birdsong. Some annotations, corrections and comments from the time of the transcription.

With a note on the first page 'Begins 1837 13 Jan 1910'.
